New interim managers sometimes lament that breaking into the industry can be challenging.

Some talk of a "catch 22" situation, in that to get a first assignment through some interim management agencies, they need to have developed a track record as a successful interim manager first!

Of course agencies are right to be cautious. Because "reputation is everything" they don't want to take unnecessary risks with any of their clients, and inevitably new interim managers represent more of a risk than those who already have successful interim management track records.

Can New Interim Managers Do Anything More?

There are some steps that prospective interim managers can take to mitigate this sense of risk that interim management service providers sometimes have. Whilst doing them brings no guarantee of success, they at least indicate that an individual isn't just "passing through" the interim management industry on their way to their next permanent role; and that's important to interim service providers. Every interim manager that they place successfully on assignment for clients and who will be there for the future is one less interim manager that they need to take a risk on placing with new clients in the future.
