Thinking About Using An Interim Executive ?

As organisations downsize and the demand for change continues to increase, the interim executive management market has grown quickly. Organisations are increasingly finding that hiring an interim manager or a former "Big Four" consultant offers them the benefits of bringing in specialists who not only know how to deliver results quickly, but aren't afraid to take full ownership for delivering them.

What Is an Interim Executive Manager?

They'll either be a senior manager with a lot of blue chip business expertise and/or a consultant from one of the "Big Four" firms. Either will have highly credible expertise in a particular discipline or disciplines; and will thrive on the variety of working with different clients and making things happen for them. They operate as "independents", usually through a VAT registered limited company with professional indemnity insurance through interim management service providers like ourselves.

Clients who wish to use the services of an interim executive, contract with a service provider, who in turn contract with the interim's limited company.

What Do They Do?

Typically contracted for a discrete period of time, (normally at least three months, but occasionally for as much as a year or more) an interim executive will be hired to deliver a set of pre-defined objectives. These can be tactical in nature; for example back filling for an executive who has unexpectedly left the company, or covering for maternity leave etc., but increasingly clients are requiring support for more strategic programmes where particular expertise is required to deliver step-change results. One example of this sort of requirement is that generated by post merger integrations and post acquisition integrations.

The Importance of Track Record

An interim executive will have a demonstrable track record for delivering value against demanding business objectives; having developed and honed the necessary skills-sets for this over many years. Yet they must also be able to thrive on the variety; to be comfortable with the higher level of uncertainty that comes when moving from one assignment in one environment to another, and be able to rely on strong diagnostic and analytical skills as well as an ability to build strong relationships quickly in order to be able to elicit information and influence decisions.
